In year 2007 Chia-jung CHANG was elected to be the in-house artist of Taipei Artist VillageDocument4Document4Document4 and finished her original script My Angel Friends. The original ideas of her play are derived from urban singles' feeling of loneliness, the lack of relationships and overwhelming depression. Contemporary society we are put up with is a place full of confusion, frustration, anxiety, and no hope. Seeking to detach from the unbearable reality, some people turn to religions, others to pseudo faith like New Age, for inner consolation. It seems that human mind can be settled down only in a transcendental world created by our imagination.
Personal melancholy may probably result from genetics, family background or heartbreaking experiences, and as we know can be cured by medicine or consultation treatment. Our society's huge melancholy, however, is of no cure and no exit for individuals. How can one survive under such melancholic circumstance of both inner and outside world? It is the blueness that Chia-jungwould strive to explore and develop into her work.
On observing the approach of theatre scripts, Chia-jung is interested in the surrealistic effects when on stage words and physicality integrate into one. The combination of realistic and fictional, being a de-construction (movement) of meaning (words), creates an abstract space open up for multiple layers of interpretation. While trying to make the scene fragmented, illusive and dream-like, the plots and characters maintain their coherence and clarity. In My Angle Friends, time and space leaps, re-organizes and flows the way as human psyche functions. Different genres, such as narrative, dialogue, monologue, poem and prose, are deployed and at the same time set free in this play, for it is an adventure for the audience through reality and illusion, and in between.
This play was presented in a recital presentation in May, 2008, and was invited to be performed at the 2008 Taiwan Women Theater Festival, where Chia-jung directed the play herself. Chia-jung got her great reputation by both the audience and scholars in the theatre field, who later released their criticisms and comments in the media.
〈Next stop: Departure〉 is a play that presents Taiwanese contemporary life, combining traditional drama and modern theatre, while arranging the plot mixing past with present from a magical realistic approach. It successfully combines Peking opera, puppetry, modern theatre, and interaction with audience.
Boldly rejuvenating this all-time classic, Chang converts the two leading roles, from strangers into father and daughter separated for years. The love message from the young mistress is also altered as the love letter from her mother to her long-missing father. Intentionally boarding this boat, Peach-Blossom tries to find her father.
During the trip, each passenger takes turn to tell the story of his or her family, the father and the daughter realizes the identity of each other by joining the story-telling. These stories, one after another, about leaving home and coming back, makes this trip a process of assuring family bound, and going home, taking them to the next stop of their life.
